Classifications & Badges

At North Downs Archery Club we encourage members to score their rounds and award quiver badges when an archer reaches a particular level. The first badge for a particular award is given free. If an archer wishes to keep previous badges when being awarded a higher one, they will need to pay the cost of the new badge.

In addition to badges gained for specific round scores, we also participate in the Archery GB Classification Scheme and award Archery and Bowman Tier badges when the appropriate levels have been reached (note that Master Bowman Tier classifications can only be awarded by Archery GB). For more detail see below.

Round Badges

The following rounds will be eligible for badges when particular scores are obtained

Frostbite Round

The Frostbite round (see Rounds) consists of 3 dozen arrows at 30m shooting at an 80cm target face. You have 6 arrows for sighters. We shoot the Frostbite round quite regularly in the winter months, when the threat of rain limits the time we have to shoot!

The Frostbite badges range from 150 to 330. The badge numbers are 125 (juniors only), 150 (Juniors only), 175 (Juniors and Barebow only), 200, 225, 250, 275, 300, 315, 330.

252 Round

A “252 round” (see Rounds) aims to score 252 or more (recurve score – other bow style have different target scores) at increasing distances from 20yds to 100yds. A valid 252 score can be obtained with the first 3 dozen arrows shot at a particular distance even if the round being shot is not a specific 252 round.

You only need to make this score once in order to obtain the appropriate 252 badge. It must be scored on a club shoot or at a tournament and the score sheet or tournament score details must be given to the records officer.

Portsmouth Round

Although a Portsmouth round (see Rounds) is defined as an indoor round (20yds, 5 dozen arrows), we only currently have an outdoor range and hence shoot this round outdoors, especially during the winter months.

Badges are awarded at the following scores: 250, 300 (both Juniors only); 350 (Juniors and Barebow only); 400, 425, 450, 475, 500, 525.

You only need to make this score once in order to obtain the appropriate Portsmouth badge. It must be scored on a club shoot or at a tournament and the score sheet or tournament score details must be given to the records officer.

Handicap Badges

When particular handicap milestones are reached, we award a badge to mark the occasion!

The handicap badges will be awarded according to the member’s current handicap under AGB Rules.

Badges are awarded at the following handicaps: 100, 95, 90, 85 (all Juniors only); 80, 75 (both Juniors and Barebow only); 70, 65, 60, 55, 50, 45, 40, 35, 30.

Archery GB Classifications

In accordance with the Archery GB Classification Scheme, we award Archer 3rd Class, Archer 2nd Class, Archer 1st Class, Bowman 3rd Class, Bowman 2nd Class and Bowman 1st Class badges. To qualify for a particular badge an archer needs to obtain appropriate scores in recognized rounds totalling 12 dozen arrows (Archer tier) or 18 dozen arrows (Bowman tier) which must be at recognized club shoots or tournaments. The rounds need not be all the same type, but must be shot in the same season.

Only Archery GB can award the top three levels of Master Bowman, Grand Master Bowman and Elite Master Bowman.

The scores required to achieve a classification depends upon your gender and age group, bow style and the round you are shooting. Target scores can be generated here: https://archerycalculator.co.uk/tables/classification and a pdf containing outdoor classification tables for all genders and age groups can be downloaded here: Recurve, Longbow, Barebow, Compound. A handy page that creates a mobile-friendly version for your specific table can be found here: https://archerygeekery.co.uk/mobile-friendly-classification-tables/.
